Days out in all directions!

Our location is quiet, rural and can feel like miles from anywhere. Some guests arrive and feel no need to leave the property. Others take the opportunity to explore further into Somerset and Devon, and we are blessed with some fabulous day trips - in all directions - from The Cottage Beyond.

Diggerland, Donkey Sanctury, Dunster Castle, Deepest darkest Devon, Delightful Dulverton..... with so many options it can be difficult to decide which way to look when planning an excursion from The Cottage Beyond while you are here on holiday.

Some would say there is so much to do here in the house, gardens and around the farm, that there isn't enough time to head out! But we wanted to highlight the opportunities that are there if you do choose to take a day or two exploring the local area, or fancied something a bit different to do with your family and friends.

Dunster - North

Head North to the spectacular village of Dunster, nestled high on the wooded hillside above the Bristol Channel.  Dunster Castle is a National Trust property steeped in history, it has existed there since at least the Norman Times and has an impressive medieval gatehouse and beautiful terraced gardens leading down to a tranquil riverside garden and historic working watermill. Dunster is a beautiful 45 mins drive away up over Exmoor.

West Somerset Railway - North East

If you'd rather travel by train to get up onto the North Coast then the West Somerset Railway is the way to do it!  Hopping on at Bishops Lydeard (25mins drive) you can steam your way through tunnels and cuttings, stopping at idylic little picturesque stations.  You can hop off for a walk on the way, or head all the way to the beach at Minehead - and a chance for fish and chips and an ice cream before your leisurely journey back.

Wellington - East

Head east into Wellington if you are after a shorter excursion - in our local town and the surrounding villages you will find plenty of cafes and eateries to keep you full, we would always recommend Braziers at Tonedale for delicious coffee, or The Pump House if you fancy something a bit different with some atmosphere for an evening meal.  Wellington shops have most things you could need, and you can either pick up your essentials from some of the local village shops or farmers markets, or head to the larger supermarkets in town; there is a Waitrose, Coop and an Asda.  Wellington itself has some lovely playparks and if its a wet day you could head to Flip Out to burn off some energy indoors!

The Donkey Sanctuary - South

The Donkey Sanctuary in Sidmoth is just under an hour away and provides an opportunity to get up close with Donkeys! The sanctuary's work continues across the globe providing advice and guidance to people working with Donkeys, working to improve welfare and conditions for Donkeys everywhere.  In Sidmouth they have created a location to educate and inform while looking after Donkeys who have been rescued from a number of different situations.  They have a cafe and space to wander around the farm, and regularly have nature trails and other additional activities to entertain.

Diggerland Devon - Southwest

We were devastated when at the end of the season in 2020 Diggerland Devon announced it was closing - but we have some fantastic news - it is re-opening for the 2022 season!  Not just for those who love diggers (though that does help!) there are opportunities to dig, to ride, and to be swung around in a huge digger bucket on 'spin dizzy'!  With green space and a large play area too there is a lot of fun to be had - just 25 mins drive away.

Dulverton - West

Travel west onto Exmoor and you'll be amazed by the beautiful villages and bubbling brooks you pass through and over.  Tarr Steps is just up stream from Dulverton and is the perfect spot for a picnic or to start a walk from through dappled woodland along the banks of the River Barle.  Plenty of places to stop for a cream tea or to be pulled a pint of local ale.
