Spring days at Kittisford Barton are best spent slowly with muddy boots, fresh air, and no real plan at all. From woodland wanders and hidden fairy doors to picnics by the stream and sunsets from the sofa, there’s plenty to fill a day (or not fill it at all). Here are ten simple ways to make the most of the season during your stay.
Spring has arrived gently here at Kittisford Barton this year with blossoms appearing tentatively, days stretching a little longer, and the dawn chorus growing ever lo
uder. It’s a season that invites you to slow down and notice the small, beautiful details of the countryside.
So, once you’ve had your morning cuppa, here are ten simple ways to make the most of spring in the Somerset countryside.
1. Start (or End) the Day with the Sky
Whether you’re an early riser or more of a night owl, make time for a sunrise or sunset. The sunrise from The Cottage Beyond and Yonder View can be truly spectacular, while The Nest is perfectly positioned for a golden sunset - best enjoyed from the comfort of the sofa or the outdoor seating on the balcony.
2. Wander Up to the Woods
Take a gentle walk up to the woods and enjoy the spring flowers beneath the canopy such as primroses, lesser celandine, and violets. And yes, even grown-ups are encouraged to have a go on the swings.
3. Hunt for the Fairy Doors
While you’re there, see if you can find all twelve fairy doors hidden among the trees. It’s a small and incredibly magical adventure to delight all ages.
4. Walk through Watery Lane
Follow Watery Lane in wellies... or, if you’re feeling brave, go barefoot and embrace the season. It’s all part of the fun.
5. Visit Stawley Village Shop
Head to Stawley Village Shop and Tea Room for a well-earned cup of tea and a slice of cake. You can walk, run, cycle - or drive (no judgement here).
6. Explore the Footpaths
With plenty of walks across the farm and several public footpaths to follow, there’s no shortage of places to explore. Each property has an OS map you’re welcome to borrow - the perfect companion for a slow wander.
7. Take on the Stamp Box Challenge
Pick up a map, a stamp book, and your sense of adventure, then set off around the farm. There’s no need to complete it all in one go - or even at all. It’s the journey that counts.
8. Picnic Without a Plan
Pack a bag with whatever you have and set off without a destination. Hugh’s bench by the stream at the bottom of the farm is a favourite spot, but we also know that half the joy is finding your own.
9. Find a Sunny Spot and Read
Each cottage is stocked with books, and there’s no shortage of cosy corners both inside and out. Find a patch of sunshine, settle in, and let time drift by.
10. Walk to Wellington Monument
Take a trip to Wellington Monument. You can park in Wellington and walk up, or start from the National Trust car park and follow the 1km path. Now that spring has returned you can even book in to climb the 232 steps to the top for sweeping views of the Somerset and Devon countryside via the National Trust website.
Spring at Kittisford Barton isn’t about doing everything. It’s about enjoying everything. Take your time, follow your curiosity, and let the season unfold around you.
