🌌 Stargazing in Somerset: Watch the August Meteor Shower from Kittisford’s Dark Skies 🌠

Every August, the Perseid meteor shower puts on a dazzling display in the night sky - and Kittisford Barton’s dark skies offer the perfect setting to watch it. Whether you're soaking in the hot tub at Yonder View, lounging on the patio at The Nest, or lying on a blanket outside The Cottage Beyond, each property offers a magical way to enjoy the show and reconnect with nature under the stars.

Close to the Dark Sky Reserve on Exmoor, our skies here at Kittisford Barton can be spectacular - far from the glare of city lights, our peaceful patch of the Somerset countryside is blessed with dark skies that make meteor-watching not just possible, but truly magical. Every august, one of the most beautiful celestial events lights up our skies - the Perseid meteor shower. Known for its bright, fast meteors and the occasional fireball, it’s a truly breathtaking experience for anyone lucky enough to witness it.

Whether you’re staying at The Cottage Beyond, The Nest or Yonder View, you’re perfectly placed to enjoy the show. Here’s how you can make the most of it…

🌙 The Nest: Wine, Loungers, and Wide Open Skies

There’s something romantic about watching the night sky with a glass of wine in hand — and from the balcony at The Nest, it’s hard to beat the view. As the stars begin to appear and the first meteors streak across the sky, you can sit back, sip slowly, and let the stillness sink in.

Prefer to stretch out? Head down to the patio and recline on a lounger, wrapped in a blanket, listening to the rustle of the trees and the occasional hoot of an owl. It’s peaceful, private, and unforgettable.

🔥 Yonder View: Hot Tubs & Firelight Beneath the Stars

At Yonder View, stargazing comes with a little luxury. Step into the wood fired hot tub under the open sky, and as the steam rises and your body relaxes, look up — you might just catch a meteor trailing across the heavens.

Later on, wrap up in something warm and settle by the fire pit with a mug of hot chocolate or a nightcap. The crackle of flames, the company of loved ones, and the celestial display above? Pure magic.

🌿 The Cottage Beyond: Blankets, Bedrooms & Big Sky Views

Over at The Cottage Beyond, stargazing is as easy as stepping outside. Spread a blanket on the lawn or relax on the decking, lie back, and let your eyes adjust. No screens, no streetlights - just you, the still night air, and the twinkling sky.

And for those who prefer to stay cosy, Bedroom 2's expansive windows offer a spectacular view of the sky, all from the warmth of your bed. There’s no better way to drift off than with the stars above and the quiet countryside all around.

✨ When to Watch

The Perseid meteor shower, although visible through most of August, peaks between 11th-13th August, and the best time to view is late at night into the early hours, ideally after midnight but before the moon becomes too bright. You don’t need any special equipment - just give your eyes 20 minutes to adjust to the darkness and look up.

This year’s shower is expected to be particularly good, with up to 100 meteors per hour at its peak.

📍 Make It a Moment to Remember

Whether you’re here for a summer break, a weekend escape, or simply want to reconnect with nature, the night skies of Kittisford Barton have a way of making you feel grounded - and a little bit enchanted.

Although we are already fully booked for this year's meteor shower why not plan ahead for stary skies at other times of the year or in advance of next year's natural show?
