Nestled in the heart of Somerset, our 160 acre Organic farm stands as a testament to the principles of biodynamic farming. Here, we don't just cultivate crops and raise animals; we embrace a holistic approach that works in harmony with nature. Let's delve into what biodynamic farming is all about, using our farm as a practical example.
Working with Nature's Rhythms
Biodynamic farming respects the natural rhythms and cycles of the land. Instead of fighting against nature with chemicals and intensive practices, we work with it. We understand that healthy soil, thriving wildlife, and a productive landscape goes hand in hand. By following the principles of biodynamic farming, we aim to create a balanced ecosystem where each element supports and sustains the others.
Diverse Wildlife, Diverse Ecosystem
Our farm is home to a variety of wildlife, from the key mamals of deer, badgers, otters and foxes to the wildflowers and plant species that inhabit our rich grassland and biodiverse hedgerows and woodlands. We recognise each animal and plants role in the ecosystem; with some benefits of a diverse habitat being pest control and soil health, alongside providing a haven for many species that are at risk of extintction or are rare due to modern farming practices. By providing habitats and respecting the animal's natural behaviors, we create a more resilient and biodiverse environment.
Organic Cattle: Partners in Sustainability
Our organic Angus and Dexter cattle are central to our farming practices. They graze on the organic pastures, with some areas of silvopasture grazing now also being used. These gentle giants fertilise the soil with their manure and help to naturally control vegetation. By raising them without antibiotics or hormones, we ensure that our meat is not only healthier but also produced in a way that respects animal welfare and environmental sustainability and also tastes better, reflecting the richness of the land on which it's grown.
Silvopasure: a new concept here at Kittisford Barton Farm
Silvopasture is an agroforestry practice that integrates trees or shrubs with livestock grazing, offering mutual benefits for both the environment and farm productivity. By strategically planting trees or shrubs within grazing areas, silvopasture provides shade and shelter for livestock, improves soil health, and enhances biodiversity. This system promotes diverse forage, reduces erosion, and acts as a carbon sink, sequestering atmospheric carbon dioxide. Silvopasture fosters a more sustainable and resilient agricultural landscape, harnessing the synergies between trees/shrubs and livestock to improve overall farm sustainability and mitigate climate change.
Joining the Movement
As the world faces increasing environmental challenges, the need for sustainable farming practices has never been more urgent. Biodynamic Organic farming offers a practical solution that works with nature, not against it. Whether you're a farmer, consumer, or simply curious about where your food comes from, we invite you to join us on this journey towards a more sustainable future.
Here at Kittisford Barton Farm biodynamic farming isn't just a concept; it's a way of life.
