Landmarkation : lan(d)mɑːkeɪʃ(ə)n : a holiday to celebrate a time-based, landmark event or occasion.

Earlier this year we came across a word that was new to us, and we think will be new to most of you – ‘Landmarkation’.  This word, rather than being about physical landmarks or marking your land, is in fact all about celebration, family, holiday and time-related landmarks. 

A bit like a ‘staycation’, a ‘landmarkation’ is a type of holiday where you can acknowledge large life ‘landmarks’ such as big birthdays and wedding anniversaries, or landmark dates with friends, marking the passage of time since a graduation, or when you first met.

There is evidence that placing a high priority on a ‘temporal landmark’, and creating memories with an event helps to ground your memories and experiences. By including more time-based landmarks into your life, and paying more attention to ones that already exist, you can help yourself experience time differently than if your days, months and years have no clear experiences to differentiate them.

Here at The Cottage Beyond we have been privileged enough to have been chosen as the base for a number of ‘Lanmarkations’ over the years.  18^th, 21^st, 30^th, 40^th, 50^th, 60^th, 65^th, 70^th, 80^th and 90^th Birthdays have all been celebrated (know anyone with a 100^th birthday coming up – we’d love to have you!).  Wedding anniversaries: Silver, Ruby and Golden have also all been used for reasons to get away as a family.  And groups of friends who have met through university, having children, or just being best of mates, have chosen to take a holiday to acknowledge the incredible 10/20/30 years of having known each other by coming to TCB.
