Exploring the animals at Kittisford Barton Farm

Alongside the Angus Cattle that we rear to supply the Organic Beef market we have other heritage breeds of livestock here on the farm, here is an overview of the animals you might meet while exploring Kittisford Barton Farm.

When you come and stay at The Cottage Beyond or at Yonder View, we give you the freedom to roam around the farm, exploring its sprawling woods, lush clover meadows, and rich grasslands. Kittisford Barton Farm is a haven for biodiversity, inviting visitors to embark on a journey through its diverse landscapes and footpaths.  Alongside the fabulous physical location we have some true characters living here (both human and animal!) - but here is an overview of the Sheep, Cattle and Pigs who you may meet while out and about!

Soay Sheep:

Originating from the remote St. Kilda archipelago off the coast of Scotland, Soay sheep are a primitive breed that has grazed the rugged landscapes for centuries. These hardy, small-sized sheep have a distinctive appearance with a shaggy coat that varies in color. Known for their self-sufficiency and ability to thrive in challenging environments, Soay sheep are often chosen by farmers looking to integrate a low-maintenance breed into their flocks.

Dexter Cattle:

Named after the small village of Dexter in Ireland, Dexter cattle are one of the smallest cattle breeds in the world. Despite their diminutive size, Dexters are known for their efficiency in converting forage into high-quality beef and milk. With a calm temperament and an ability to adapt to various climates, Dexter cattle are an excellent choice for small-scale farms and homesteads. Their compact size also makes them well-suited for land management and conservation purposes.

Kune Kune Pigs:

Originating from New Zealand, Kune Kune pigs are a unique and friendly breed that has gained popularity for their docile nature and suitability for small farms. These pigs have a distinctive appearance with a rotund body, short legs, and a characteristic tassel of hair on their lower jaw. Kune Kune pigs are excellent grazers, making them ideal for pasture-based farming systems. Their friendly disposition and manageable size make them a favorite among smallholders and those seeking a companionable pig breed.

Benefits of Heritage Breeds:

  1. Biodiversity: Supporting and raising heritage breeds contributes to the preservation of genetic diversity within animal populations, this is something we are particularly proud of with our Dexter Cattle, and as members of the Dexter Cattle Society.

  2. Adaptability: These breeds often exhibit a high level of adaptability to different climates and environmental conditions, making them versatile for various farming practices.  While our Angus Cattle need to be housed over winter, some of the Dexters can overwinter outside as they are a hardier breed which cause less damage to the fields here.

  3. Sustainable Agriculture: Heritage breeds are well-suited for sustainable and regenerative farming practices, promoting a holistic approach to agriculture.  Here at Kittisford Barton Farm we practice sustainable farming practices and have been a certified Organic farm for over 20 years.

Kittisford Barton Farm is a living testament to the beauty of the coexistence of agriculture and nature. As you explore the woods, traverse the clover meadows, and follow the footpaths, you get to witness these things first hand, something we hope all our guests who are able to choose to do. It is a place where the richness of the land is celebrated, and the importance of biodiversity is embraced—a true sanctuary for those seeking solace in the embrace of the natural world.
